Bishopsteignton Outdoor Art Group

boag boatThe Bishopsteignton Outdoor Art Group makes art out of found waste and sustainable materials. This intrepid, inspirational, inventive and lively village group only has one rule and that is: ‘if it stops being fun, we stop’. But at the moment, the group does not seem in any imminent danger of stopping and instead seems to be going from strength to strength.

From humble beginnings in 2005, the group has produced a remarkable number of ‘outside art’ projects given that the members are all volunteers with limited time, no budget and allegedly little artistic skill. ‘It may be rubbish or litter to some, but it’s a useful source of raw materials for us.’ ‘Road Kill’ was made from over 1,500 squashed cans found along the roadside where they were graphically traumatised by vehicles. ‘Drowning not Waving…..in Plastic’ trawler boat (aka ‘Rainbow Worrier’) was made from over 5,000 plaited plastic bags and other plastic waste and not launched into the sea where it would have joined millions of tons of other plastic waste wrapping itself round the innards of delicate sea life. Both sculptures won awards at TRAIL (Teignmouth Recycled Art In Landscape).

boag carIn 2010we made a post apocalyptic encampment sculpture out of over 1,000 found hub caps….. as you do. Anyone in the village or local environs can join. No artistic ability required but a sense of humour is essential.
